Fall 2020 Season Plan

High Level Schedule

  • Registration August 9th – August 19
  • Registration finalized August 23nd.
  • Practices Tuesday–Friday at 5pm and 6pm.  Practices scheduled to run September 8 – October 30th.
  • As of right now Tuesday-Thursday practices will be held at Longfellow Middle School and Friday practices at Churchill Elementary School.
  • Meets Sundays between 12pm and 6pm.  Meets run from September 13 – October 25th (possibly November 1).
  • Meets will be held at Falls Church High School.

**Key Modifications**

  • Minimum age to register is now 7 yrs old as of September 1, 2020.
  • Reducing number of registrants from 350 to 216.
  • Limiting practice size to 27 athletes (3 "pods" of 9 kids).
  • In order to hold a practice session we need to have a minimum of 4 coaches/volunteers, preferably 5.  One of these volunteers will be responsible for overseeing social distancing and mask wearing.
  • Social distancing will be a priority.  The state guidelines are 10 ft where feasible.
  • During registration you will sign your child(ren) up for 1 practice slot that they will attend all season.
  • Any age can attend a practice so that siblings can attend together.  We will form the "pods" by age range.
  • Not offering javelin or shotput this season due to the difficulty sanitizing in between users.
  • Meet Day Sundays will be divided into 3 or 4 sessions instead of 2.  Meets will most likely feature fewer events.
  • Families will sign up for the Meets weekly.  We will organize the Meet sessions based on last name so siblings can attend together.  We will still run heats by age range.
  • Masks (or gaitors/buffs) will be required for athletes when not actively running, for all on-track/field coaches and volunteers and for all family members when entering/exiting and not able to distance 6 ft on the sidelines or in the stands.
  • We will not be sponsoring attendance at Junior Olympics qualifying or championship meets, if they are even held.
  • All families need to sign a waiver during registration.

General COVID-19 Safety Precautions

  • We are reducing the maximum number of registrants from 350 to 216 (27 per practice x 8 practices).  This will allow us to align with the state’s social distancing requirements.
  • Per the state of Virginia’s guidelines, our objective is 10 ft of social distancing, as much as possible, for everyone on the track/field.  Masks (or gaitors/buffs) will be worn by athletes, coaches and volunteers when not actively participating in an event or activity.  For observers on the sidelines or in the stands, our objective is 6 ft of social distancing from anyone you are not related to. Observers are required to wear a mask when 6 ft of social distancing is not possible (entering/exiting, checking in, etc).
  • A parent must sign the Covid-19 Waiver on behalf of each registering athlete during the registration process.
  • The minimum age to participate will be raised to 7.  We are usually thrilled to welcome our youngest athletes, but we just don’t feel confident in their ability to as easily follow the mask and social distancing guidelines.
  • All athletes, coaches and volunteer parents must check their temperature before attending any practice or meet.
  • Any athlete, coach, on-field volunteer or accompanying parent who is feeling sick, or has been exposed to the Covid-19 virus in the past 14 days, is not allowed to come to participate/attend and must stay home.  Out of extreme caution, we request that if anyone in the family has symptoms of an illness or has been exposed to the Covid-19 virus that you stay home.
  • All athletes, coaches and volunteer parents should put on their mask and use hand sanitizer before entering the track/field area.
  • All athletes must wear masks when entering and exiting track/field and in between practice or meet events.  Our goal is that athletes have the masks on whenever not actively running/participating.
  • All adults volunteering on the track/field must wear masks at all times, unless they are running with the athletes.
  • All athletes, coaches and volunteer parents need to maintain safe distancing at practice and meets.  The state requirement is 10 feet, whenever possible.
  • We will still require that all athletes be accompanied by an adult at practices and meets.
  • We request that you minimize the attendance of additional adults and siblings at practices and meets.  All accompanying family members must maintain a social distance of 6 ft from any other observing adult or children to whom they are not related – even if you are comfortable socializing with these individuals outside of the MYTF environment.  If we find that social distancing among observers is not happening, we  will be forced to limit attendance to only 1 adult.
  • Masks are required for all observers when arriving/departing and whenever not able to maintain 6 ft of social distancing.
  • For each practice session, we will require a non-coaching parent volunteer to act as Covid-19 safety oversight.  This volunteer will not lead any activities but will focus on enforcing the mask and social distancing requirements.  This volunteer position will also help take/monitor attendance in order to ensure only the athletes assigned to that practice session are in attendance.
  • For each meet, we will require parent volunteers to fulfill a Covid-19 safety oversight role.  Depending on meet attendance we anticipate this need to be 2-3 parents.  They will be primarily focused on enforcing mask and social distancing requirements.
  • All water bottles must be clearly labeled.  All athletes should keep “their hands to themselves”.  Paying attention, being respectful and following directions are important for any seasons but will be required for this season.  The stakes are too high and we cannot be as lenient as we might have been in the past.
  • Any athlete, coach, volunteering parent or observing adult/sibling not following these requirements will be asked to leave the track/field area.  Any recurring issues will result in us asking that athlete/family to not participate for the rest of the season (without a refund).
  • We will not be sponsoring/coordinating attendance at any Junior Olympics meets at the end of this season.
  • MYTF will be providing neck gaitors/buffs for athletes and practice volunteers but you may wear a mask of your choosing.

Practice Plans & Modifications

  • During registration each athlete will sign up for a (1) specific practice session.  This will need to be done on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • In the past, we have allowed athletes to attend whichever practice session, and however many practice sessions, they wanted to.  Given the need to socially distance on the field (the state requirement is 10 ft) and lower the athlete-to-coach ratio to help with enforcing protocols, we just cannot do that this season.
  • As a temporary change during Covid-19 times, we are not allocating practice sessions by age range.  Any age athlete can sign up for any 1 practice slot.  This means that siblings can all attend the same practice slot if desired.
  • We will limit the number of athletes attending each practice session to 27.  This equates to 3 groups of 9 athletes, grouped by an age range.
    • These groups will form a “pod” and will practice together each week.  They will rotate through “stations” as usual, each led by a different coach/parent volunteer.
  • We will focus primarily on running (short, mid and longer distances) activities this season, with the addition of activities that lend themselves to working on long jump technique and core strength.
    • We will not be offering javelin or shotput during practice or meets and will not run relay races with batons during practice.  The effort to disinfect between each athlete’s use is just too onerous.
  • In order to offer a practice session, we will require a minimum of 5 season-long coach/parent volunteer spots be filled.  This includes 4 coach/assistant coach/parent volunteer positions that will facilitate “stations”.  Ideally 2 of the 4 are able to run the trail run with the athletes.  The 5th slot is for the Covid-19 safety oversight role.  This individual will be focused on attendance, mask use and social distancing.
  • Practice will run for 50 minutes instead of 1 hour.  That will allow the 5pm practice attendees to leave the track/field before the 6pm practice attendees arrive.
  • All observing family members must socially distance (6 ft) from non-family members.  There are no exceptions, even if you are comfortable socializing with those non-family members outside of the MYTF environment.
  • Please understand that these are our current plans.  Our primary goal is to keep people safe.  In that theme, we might have to modify plans during the season.

Meet Plans & Modifications

  • Our current plan is to hold internal meets on Sundays as we normally do.  This is dependent on being able to successfully socially distance and effectively manage the athletes, volunteers and observing family members safely.  It is also dependent on having enough volunteers.
  • We anticipate having families sign up for each upcoming meet on a weekly basis.  This will allow us to forecast attendance.
  • Our goal is to accommodate all interested athletes every Sunday.  However, if we feel we cannot safely operate the meet at those attendance numbers, we may need to go to an every other week model (such that any one family comes every other Sunday and we can reduce attendance by 50%).
  • Meet Sundays will be divided into sessions as usual (and held in the window of 12-6pm).  Historically we have held 2 sessions (by age range) for Track & Field Meets and 1 session (all ages) for Cross Country Meets.  Social distancing will necessitate reducing/managing the number of kids in attendance at any one time.
    • We will most likely divide into 3 or 4 sessions, depending on anticipated attendance.  The number of sessions may change from Sunday to Sunday.
  • Similar to practice, as a temporary change during Covid-19 times, we anticipate dividing up the Sunday Meet sessions by last name instead of age.  This will allow siblings to attend the same session.
    • To whatever extent possible, we will still run heats by age range.
  • We will modify what events we offer.  We plan to offer both cross country and track-based running events.  We also plan to offer long jump.  We will not be offering javelin or shotput.
  • For the track-based races, we will only use lanes 1-3-5.  We will modify the starting process/technique for both track-based and cross country races so that we can maximize social distancing.
  • Our goal is to continue to capture results.  However, the need to adjust starting approaches might alter the exactness of results.  Please remember we are a developmental program focused on the experience, exercise and participation.
  • We will continue to offer result ribbons, but not as a self-serve station.  If you want result ribbons please check in upon arrival at a meet.  A volunteer will create the ribbons, put them in a baggie and you can collect them on your way out.
  • We will continue to offer medals and trophies.  We will hand them out as you leave the meet.
  • We really need every athlete to remember their race bib and safety pins on Sundays.  We will continue to offer blank bibs and extra safety pins but these will need to be requested at the check-in desk.
  • Please understand that all of this will put extra work on the volunteers at the check-in table.  Thanks for your patience (and social distancing) if a line forms.
  • All volunteers working the check-in desk will be required to wear masks and hand sanitize before handing something to an athlete or parent.
  • We still need to determine where an athlete will sit/stay in between events.  Options include on the field (socially distanced), in the stands with a parent (socially distanced) or in the car.
  • All observing family members must socially distance (6 ft) from non-family members, either in the stands or standing on the fence.  There are no exceptions, even if you are comfortable socializing with those non-family members outside of the MYTF environment.
  • If athletes cannot socially distance appropriately we will need to modify what we offer or how we offer events.
  • Please understand that these are our current plans.  Our primary goal is to keep people safe.  In that theme, we might have to modify plans during the season.

  • Meets are currently planned for the following Sundays:  Sept 8 (Orientation Meet), Sept 15, Sept 22, Sept 29, Oct 6, Oct 13, Oct 20, Oct 27 (Family Fun Meet).  Nov 3 can be used as a make-up Meet, if necessary.
  • In the Fall, MYTF offers kids the opportunity to participate in cross country events (1k, 2k, 3k, 4k) as well as the traditional Track & Field Meets.  As such, we alternate between the two themes for our Meets and plan to offer 3 T&F and 3 Cross Country Meets for Fall 2019.
  • All Fall Meets will be held at Falls Church High School.
  • Track & Field Meets (just like Spring) will be held between 1 and 5pm.  We split the Track & Field Meets into two sessions, 1-3pm and 3-5pm, by age group (younger/older).
  • Cross Country Meets are a 2pm start for ALL athletes/ALL ages.
  • As with practice, your child's age group is based on their age at the start of the season (8/27).  Your child will receive a race bib at the first meet he/she attends.  The race bib's first digit/number represents your child's assigned age group.
  • Just as all other sports separate by ages/grades, we require your child attend the meet session assigned to their age group so they can compete along side their peers.  We cannot allow older/younger siblings to compete in the older/younger age group.
  • Please remember that a responsible adult needs to remain at the meet.
  • We always need on-field volunteers (no experience required) so please come on down!  With that said, only volunteering adults can be on the field.  All spectators should watch from the stands or the fence.
